JERK OF THE WEEK...

It's time for the staff at Needtovent to announce the "Jerk of the Week" -- and guess what, we have a tie!

Beemer Weems is a baseball player for Baylor University. During the Regionals in Houston this past weekend this silver-spoon-fed-cretin from a very upper-class family displayed absolutely no class in talking smack after hitting a home run against the University of Arizona. Even the umpires were barely able to keep lil' Beemer under control. Given the fact he's from Virginia we are quite suprised that "Screamer Beemer" did not opt to turn in his Louiseville Slugger for a broom handle and join the Duke Lacrosse team.

Jim Bob Cooter is a back-up quarterback for the University of Tennessee Volunteers. He's from a very priviledged family also, but his arrest for DUI may jeopardize his playing status. Not to worry Cooter, you can always transfer to Duke by turning in your pigskin for a vulcanized lacrosse ball. We're sure you'll know where to stick it.

They don't call 'em the Blue Devils for nothing...

All this just goes to show that parents must be extremely careful in naming their children. The consequences of a stupid moniker can obviously have long-lasting effects. Luckily, this is not always the case as Destiny Frankenstein (a very good softball player for the Kansas University Jayhawks) proves the exception to the rule.

It must be her destiny...

If you're going to take personal shots at an 18-year-old, at least have the class to get your facts straight.

First of all, the incident was against Arizona State and not the University of Arizona, as you wrote.

Second of all, it's easy to point out that Weems talked trash while rounding first base after hitting a dramatic home run in a key spot of an NCAA Regional game. Obviously for you, it's much harder to point out that earlier in the game several Arizona State players made derogatory comments at Weems. Furthermore, it's harder still, for you obviously, to point out that the team you defend, Arizona State, is coached by a man who made physical advances at a Baylor player more than half his own age on the field one day earlier.

And, for the record, in this day and age, 95 percent of college baseball players are "silver-spoon-fed" and/or "from a very upper-class family." Weems is hardly the exception to the rule.

You are correct in pointing out that the team on the field when Beemer went ballistic was, indeed, the Arizona State Sun Devils. Needtovent.com is embarrassed by this mistake and accepts full responsibility for failing to double-check our story prior to it being posted.

As for the alleged events before Beemer's blast, we can only state that we tuned in just an inning or two prior to the taunting home run trot and so we were unaware of them.

Our primary concern is that far too many individuals fail to take responsibility for their actions. This is true for the ASU coach as well as the ASU players. Had we seen the behavior you describe, we would have berated them as well.

Having said this, it doesn't give Beemer a free pass.

As for being 18 -- Beemer can vote, he can join the military and fight in Iraq and he can also make the choice to refrain from being a baby.

Duly noted on all accounts. Your reply is appreciated.

If you would like to see a picture of Murphy's tirade toward Baylor pitcher Ryan LaMotta, visit the following site:

And Weems' first name is Beamer ... not Beemer.

Thanks for providing the link to the photograph of ASU Head Coach Pat Murphy being restrained by the umpire. This is inexcusable behavior -- a college coach should never approach another team's player unless it is to shake hands or offer encouragement. This declaration is known as Needtovent's "Woody Hayes Rule."

We would like to say we misspelled Weems' name in our effort to "protect the innocent," but we can't. What actually happened was we googled "Beemer" and there were plenty of postings under that spelling -- 661 to be exact. It is now obvious that we should have checked with the official Baylor Baseball website instead. Under the correct spelling we later discovered there were 14,800 postings.

We seem to be in the minority again...

A question: Do you think this kid drives a BMW?

Actually, he drives a truck. The name Beamer is derived from his father, whose nickname in pro ball was "Weemer."

Anyway, this is one web surfer who has gained a great deal of respect for you and your blog due to the way in which you have responded to my posts. Thank you.

Keep up the good work.

Thank you for the kind words. If you feel inclined, we would appreciate you telling your friends about our blog -- the more readers the better...

Weems is actually 20 - possibly 21 - you can check his school website. He's a spoiled brat who starts conversations with friends with "hey bitch". Sorry for the expletive, but that's Weems - no class. Also, not all baseball players come from families "with money" some of the best came from blue-collar families with great family values who don't let their kids start conversations with "hey bitch".

Thanks for the added information regarding Beamer Weems; it is very enlightening. As you know, the original posting was made on June 8, 2006, making him around 18 at the time. Also, we certainly agree with you that many (if not most) college baseball players do, in fact, come from blue-collar and/or middle-class families. The comment stating "95 percent of college baseball players are "silver-spoon-fed..." was made by a reader, not us. In the final analysis, it sure seems like Beamer more than deserved the "Jerk of the Week" designation. Do you know if he is on track to graduate?
